Canon decided that it would no longer invest in cameras for the CES 2021, instead of allowing customers to take pictures from space. The company launched a social platform that which informs the utilization of the CE-SAT-1 satellite by its customers. This satellite has the advanced 5D Mark III DSLR for taking photos of places on Earth like California, New York, and the Bahamas.

The company unveiled the small satellite three years ago containing the EOS 5D Mark III camera linked to the Cassegrain-type (mirror) 3720mm telescope. According to the company, this satellite was orbiting at 600 kilometers offering a steady resolution of 36 inches. The comparison with the world’s satellite with the highest resolution, WorldView-4, reveals that the company has to work on this technology, especially when it is still three times below the resolution. Moreover, the satellite carries a PowerShot S110 camera, which records wide images of Erath.

The demo platform ensures that customers can photograph numerous locations and the pictures have some marks indicating the place the camera monitored and the altitude of the photograph. Nevertheless, the camera takes simulations, implying that the customer is not taking live or unique photos. For the pictures to be live feeds, the CE-SAT-1 taking the pictures must be navigating around the Earth at speeds not less than 17000 miles per hour to cover the planet in less than two hours. However, the demo confirms the potential of the satellite in offering data with appropriate resolution. Marsha Ivins, the astronaut who details the satellite’s objective and design, explained the whole concept beginning with the simulations and the actual data.

One advantage with the CE-SAT-1 satellite is that it is miniature or small a d more affordable than the conventional ones from mega satellite companies operating in the industry. Canon went further and developed an upgrade of this satellite last year. However, the upgraded version fell victim to the mishap that Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket encountered.

The company is trying to focus its efforts on developing an advanced version of the satellite to launch it early and anticipate the changes they can make while still in the initiation stage. The head of the company stated that last year’s unfortunate events had taught them to prepare adequately and assess the missions’ risk before sending their payloads. Finally, Rocket Lab is hopeful that the unfortunate event that befell their Rocket last year has not soured the partnership for rideshare missions.
