The White House has set out a proposal to revise the planetary-protection laws of the federal government that work to avoid pollution between the Earth as well as other habitable zone planets. The paper details the government’s strategy to revitalize planetary-protection laws over the next year with a suite of federal departments. Planetary security is addressed in two ways by scientists and engineers: maintaining other destinations free of substantial pollution from Earth as well as keeping our world protected from potentially harmful extra-terrestrial materials.

The proposal takes care to remember that the administration must take into account both its operations and those of private firms in both directions. “Present and future flights to Mars as well as other sites require a framework to help a safe, secure and consistent Earth and the space setting,” Scott Pace, who serves as the National Space Council Executive Secretary as well as Deputy Assistant to President Donald Trump, stated in a report published on December 30. The latest strategy draws on a target included in the Trump administration’s Space Policy Guideline released earlier in December.

“This initiative maintains American leadership in modern science, human exploration as well as private-sector space operations by setting goals for the development of the 2020 National Space Policy Direction on planetary protection,” Pace stated in the new declaration. The planetary protection interagency working team set up in July, which puts together about 20 federal agencies, of which NASA Agency is just one, has been established and will be enforced. Others also include agriculture, national security, transportation, the Environmental Protection Age and safety, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Such teamwork on topics of possibly planet-wide importance has precedence. In fact, public health authorities were instrumental in designing processes to determine the welfare of explorers and samples upon arrival here during the planning for the Apollo 11 moon launch, which will deliver lunar rocks to Earth for the very first time ever. Likewise, as NASA studies problems around future impacts of nearby asteroids, FEMA is the main collaborator. The age of current planetary defense protocols and spaceflight’s evolving environment as an impetus for new techniques were illustrated by the working group in the new Strategic Paper.

The study cites, for instance, continuing work to carry back samples from Mars, the long-term aim of NASA to take astronauts to the Red Planet, as well as the overall proliferation of commercial space players. Specifically, SpaceX has advertised its ambitions to place humans on Mars, pursuing an optimistic timetable that may travel quicker than NASA’s. Any of these developments could overlap. The government needs to prepare for an upcoming increase in the commercial space flights beyond Earth orbit, either crewed or robotic flights. “Due to the fast growth in private-sector space technologies and operations, it is very likely that United States corporations will be main stakeholders in the search for life,” the firm wrote.
